2. Why is it called “Skirl” siding?

“Skirl” is the signature name given by Haida Forest Products to their distinctive wavy-edge cedar siding. The word captures the flowing, organic “skirling” pattern of the hand-cut wavy edge — a look that cannot be replicated by machine-made siding.

3. How is Haida Skirl different from regular bevel or clapboard cedar siding?

Unlike straight-edge bevel siding, Haida Skirl has a manually crafted wavy bottom edge that creates much deeper and more dramatic shadow lines. It is also thicker in the most popular profiles, giving it a more substantial, rustic appearance perfect for log homes and timber-frame builds.

5. Is Haida Skirl siding kiln-dried?

Yes — it is kiln-dried (KD) to an average moisture content of approximately 14%. This ensures maximum stability, so the siding lays flat, shrinks less, and performs beautifully in all climates, including extreme Northern Canada winters.

6. What grade is used and why are the knots Permi-Fused?

It is Select Tight Knot (STK) grade. Every knot is carefully inspected and permanently Permi-Fused (glued from the back) so knots never loosen, pop out, or fall out — giving you a 100% tight-knot product that looks great for decades.

7. How do I install Haida Skirl wavy edge cedar siding?

It installs like standard bevel siding, but because the bottom edge is wavy and irregular, you measure/gauge each row from the top edge (not the bottom). Recommended overlap is 1-1/2" to 2". Use proper stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized nails and follow standard cedar siding best practices.

8. Does it need to be stained or finished?

Yes — we strongly recommend finishing all six sides with a high-quality exterior stain or sealer (such as our Sico ProLuxe Log & Siding finish) before or right after installation. It can also be ordered factory pre-finished, pre-primed, or pre-stained for easier on-site work and longer life.

9. Is Haida Skirl siding suitable for Northern Canada and harsh climates?

Absolutely. Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to decay, insects, and moisture. Its high heartwood content and kiln-dried stability make it an excellent choice for cold, wet, and snowy northern climates — many of our log-home customers in Northern Canada use it successfully every year.
