Sansin WoodForce Clear is a low-VOC, breathable wood treatment that protects vertical exterior wood from moisture, UV damage, and blackening—without forming a film or altering its natural look. Ideal for log homes, siding, timbers, and wood roofing, it allows wood to weather evenly and beautifully over time while remaining easy to maintain. Woodforce can be tinted to several different looks and there is also an accelerator to make it grey faster. Give us a call and we will walk you through this system.
Sansin WoodForce Clear
Durable Clear Wood Treatment for Natural Weathering
Sansin WoodForce Clear is a high-performance, ultra low-VOC wood treatment designed for those who love the look of naturally weathered wood but want to prevent the damaging effects of moisture. Unlike traditional stains that try to hide the aging process, WoodForce Clear embraces it. It allows your exterior wood to silver and patina evenly over time while providing aggressive water repellency to protect against wood rot, blackening, and structural degradation.
What Makes Sansin WoodForce Clear Unique?
Unlike traditional exterior finishes, WoodForce Clear does not mask the surface with pigment or film. It penetrates deep into the wood to provide breathable, long-term protection while allowing natural weathering to occur. This approach minimizes surface degradation and blackening while giving architects and builders the flexibility to showcase natural grain and aging. With low VOCs and easy maintenance, it’s a long-lasting and environmentally responsible choice.
Key Benefits
Natural Weathering: Allows wood to achieve a beautiful, uniform silver-grey patina without the blotchiness of unprotected weathering.
Aggressive Water Repellency: Reduces water absorption by up to 74%, keeping your wood dimensionally stable and preventing rot.
Breathable Protection: A unique water-borne formula that allows internal moisture to escape while blocking external water from entering.
Environmentally Friendly: Ultra-low VOC (less than 5g/L) and safe for use near gardens or water.
Easy Maintenance: Will not crack, peel, or blister. Maintenance is as simple as a light cleaning and a fresh coat—no aggressive sanding or stripping required.
Anti-Blackening: Protects against the fungi and mold that cause wood to turn a dirty black color rather than a clean silver-grey.
Where to Use
WoodForce Clear is recommended for use on new, weathered, or restored vertical wood surfaces, including:
Log and Timber Homes
Wood Siding and Cladding
Fences and Gazebos
Wood Shingles and Roofing
Outdoor Yard Furniture
Modified Woods (such as Accoya or Thermally Modified Wood)
Decks (Note: WoodForce is suitable for decks if a silver-grey weathered look is desired; however, it requires more frequent maintenance on horizontal surfaces).
Application Notes
Surface Preparation Requirements
- Surface must be clean, dry, and free of previous coatings
- Sand smooth wood with 60–80 grit just prior to application
- Power wash or clean with Sansin Multi-Wash as needed
- Apply only to bare or properly stripped wood
Application
- Apply to saturation using brush, spray, or flood coat
- Use a large China bristle brush to distribute product and avoid puddling
- Apply first coat at 6–8 mils wet film thickness
- Allow to dry approximately 2 hours in favorable conditions
- Apply second coat at 4–6 mils for enhanced protection
- Do not apply in direct sunlight or when rain is expected
Coverage
| Surface Type | Estimated Coverage per U.S. Gallon |
|---|---|
| Rough-sawn or porous wood | 200–250 sq. ft. |
| Sanded or smooth wood | 300–350 sq. ft. |
Note: Coverage varies significantly based on wood porosity. Weathered or “thirsty” wood will require more product.
Maintenance Required
WoodForce is designed to erode slowly over time rather than peeling.
Vertical Surfaces: Inspect every 3–6 years. When the wood begins to lose its water-beading ability or looks dull, clean the surface with Sansin Multi-Wash and apply a single maintenance coat of WoodForce Clear.
Horizontal Surfaces (Decks): Inspect every 1–2 years due to increased exposure and foot traffic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will WoodForce Clear keep my wood looking “new” (yellow/pine color)? No. WoodForce Clear is designed to allow wood to weather naturally to a silver-grey patina. To maintain a specific wood tone, use a tinted version of WoodForce or Sansin SDF.
Can I apply WoodForce over an existing oil-based stain? No. All previous coatings, especially film-forming oils or waxes, must be completely removed by sanding or stripping to allow WoodForce to penetrate.
Does WoodForce protect against rot? Yes. By reducing water absorption by up to 74%, it keeps wood dimensionally stable and significantly inhibits the moisture conditions required for wood rot and decay.
Can WoodForce be used on horizontal surfaces like decks? Yes. It is suitable for decks where a silver-grey weathered look is desired, though it may require more frequent maintenance than vertical siding.
Is it safe to use WoodForce near my garden or pond? Yes. It is an ultra-low VOC, water-borne formula (less than 5g/L VOC) that is environmentally friendly and safe for use around landscaping.
How do I know when it is time to maintain my WoodForce finish? Perform a “splash test.” If water no longer beads on the surface and instead soaks into the wood, it is time for a maintenance coat.
Can I mix WoodForce Clear with other colors? Yes. WoodForce Clear is compatible with Sansin’s tinting system to create custom “Barnboard,” “Vintage,” or “Silver” effects.
What is the best way to apply WoodForce? While it can be sprayed or brushed, back-brushing is essential to ensure the product is pushed into the grain and to prevent puddling.
Will WoodForce prevent my wood from turning black? Yes. Unlike natural unprotected weathering which often turns a dirty black due to mold, WoodForce contains ingredients that promote a clean, uniform silver-grey patina.
Can I apply WoodForce to damp wood? No. For proper penetration and bonding, the wood moisture content must be below 19%.
